Portasilo provided a turn-key bulk storage and handling system to Closed Loop Recycling the UK’s leading food grade recycling plant for bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE).
Closed Loop Recycling’s plant is capable of recycling 70,000 tonnes of bottles each year, that’s 875 million bottles or nearly 10% of the UK’s current plastic bottle recycling. They required a bulk material handling solution that reflected the high specification of the Dagenham plant and one that would ensure their operational targets were met. Portasilo were chosen as they had a range of recent experience dealing with similar complex materials and handling processes.
Closed Loop Recycling needed to ensure that their new prestigious plant in East London could get up to maximum capacity expediently, so Portasilo worked to a tight programme to ensure the clients objectives were met. Portasilo provided a complete material handling solution that included products from our leading storage, discharge and conveying ranges as well as a number of ancillary products.
The scope of works for Portasilo included the design, manufacture, install and commissioning of 5 storage silos to store approximately 35 tonnes of HDPE each, each complied too ATEX regulations. Each had complex control sensors, such as continuous level indication and pressure sensors to ensure optimised flow and operation. Portasilo also supplied pneumatic conveying systems to transfer material from the clients extruders into the storage silos. As well as pneumatic transfer systems to the big bag units and tanker filling devices and all the ancillary pipework, hoppers and valves, Portasilo developed the controls philosophy required to ensure the plant kept at optimum operation levels.
The materials managed within this solution provided some inherent complexity, for example the solution needed to be a food grade solution as the tolerances on the pellets were extremely low and the process had to completely eliminate angel hairs from forming.
Completing this project to a tight programme and within strict budgets, the client was extremely happy with the flexibility that Portasilo demonstrated in solving their issues whether they were application based or budgetary.
