Thames Refinery, London.

Portasilo Bulk Handling Systems has completed a £2.9 million sugar storage and handling system for Tate & Lyle Sugars, at the Thames Refinery, London Docklands, to the most stringent storage, mass flow, conditioning and bulk loading criteria. Portasilo’s contract formed part of one of the biggest schemes ever undertaken at Thames Refinery, an expansion programme which totalled £15 million.

Requirements

The Portasilo scheme centred on two, site- built 2500 tonne capacity sugar storage and conditioning silos, of mass flow design, capable of taking granulated sugar from process at 125 tonnes/hour with temperatures between 40-50oc and high relative humidity levels. These are the largest steel fabricated sugar storage vessels in the UK.

They have been designed to discharge on a mass flow principle ensuring a controlled discharge of sugar on a first in, first out basis.

The stainless steel mass flow cones for the silos are currently the only ones in the world on silos of such a capacity, handling such a difficult product as sugar. The success of this ingenious design confounded all the predictions of the specialist design consultants.

Solution

Portasilo’s contract included extensive mechanical handling equipment and instrumentation for each of the sugar silos and process vessels. These included sugar conditioning plant, discharge conveyers and rotary valves, continuous level detection equipment and instrumentation for continuous monitoring of pressure, temperature, humidity and movement.

Further associated areas of equipment, designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned by Portasilo included loading, dust and distribution hoppers, each designed to provide fast, predictable flow.

Successful Operation

Now proven in successful operation, the Portasilo plant had both to fulfil exceptionally demanding design criteria and be operational within a strict project timescale, on a tightly confined site and while existing production remained operational 24 hours/day, through- out the project.

All this was achieved using Portasilo’s extensive site-building capabilities and with a multi-disciplined Portasilo project team working closely and effectively with the Client’s own staff.

Output

This project, successfully completed for a client of Tate & Lyle’s stature, emphasises Portasilo’s design and manufacturing capabilities, in world markets, for large capacity bulk materials handling systems.

Portasilo delivered what they said and provided back up with no problems. The after-sales support has been excellent and they responded to any issues that we had.
