For me the biggest testament to the work done by Portasilo is the happy operators here at Mosswood
Mosswood water treatment works is one of Northumbrian Water Ltd’s (NWL) premier sites, it supplies potable water to up to 850,000 people in the Sunderland and Durham areas and can supply up to 145million litres per day. Therefore the number one priority is to not affect the operation of the site.
The facility dates from the 1960’s and NWL’s principal aims were to improve the efficiency and performance of their current equipment, without any loss of operation to the existing site as the site remained live throughout the installation phase. The current equipment was reaching the end of its asset life, with repairs becoming more complex and reliability coupled with health and safety improvements being the main drivers.
For such a critical project NWL engaged Mott MacDonald Bentley, a market leading water and waste water, design and build contractor. They took overall responsibility for the design, commissioning and installation of the Mechanical, Electrical and Controls improvements to the pre and post lime handling equipment. Mott MacDonald Bentley employed Portasilo as the bulk handling specialists with a vast and varied experience in the water sector.
The site includes two existing Hydrated Lime concrete storage vessels which fed systems for control of pH at Pre and Post clarification stages. Working closely with Mott MacDonald Bentley and other partners within the supply chain Portasilo supplied; two fabricated hopper sections one complete with Portasilo’s market leading discharger the Rotoflo for the post lime silo and a wedge outlet with aeration for the pre lime silo outlet. Other equipment supplied included mechanical screw conveyors, bi-directional trough conveyor as well as three precision metering units (PMU’s) to accurately weigh and dose the hydrated lime in to the existing ‘D’ type mixers enabling the client to achieve the required pH levels.
Due to the critical nature of the facility and the level of redundancy required, NWL had to ensure the site was live throughout the entire installation, this meant that critical emergency batching equipment was employed, which added to the complexity of the installation.
The two final conveying systems supplied by Portasilo are used to take the now powdered aluminium oxide from the grinding mills (jet & ball mills) into bagging tanks, ready for despatch. These pneumatic conveyors again feature diverter valves to direct material into any one of 10 tanks.
